Strange strangers! Go onwards. Look upwards. FLYWAY invites you to join the flock.

Trust your instincts and the golden wings. Channel your vision and take a migratory walk through the city, to quiet bird spaces and spectacular scenes. Cousins! Follow Elizabeth Dunn, with sound artist Lawrence English, as they investigate the enchanting nature of migratory birds and the epic annual journeys they make across a shifting globe in search of rest, food and a nest. In the midst of the human and bird networks that are devoted to this epic act of traveling on, there are signs of hope. We will welcome tomorrow.

About the Artist

Elizabeth Dunn

Elizabeth Dunn is one of Australia’s most exciting young artists working in hybrid forms. Her solo and collaborative practice crosses video, installation, objects, photography, and performance to create works that consider social and environmental ecology, personal and collective mythologies. Based between Queensland and Melbourne, she co-founded Cairns ARI crate59 and is an Artistic Associate with Aphids.

Lawrence English

Lawrence English is an internationally renowned media artist, composer and curator based in Australia. Working across an eclectic array of aesthetic investigations, his work prompts questions of field, perception and memory. English utilises a variety of approaches including live performance, installation and found sound/video vision to create works that generate subtle transformation of space and ask audiences to become aware of that which exists at the edge of perception.

Lara Thoms

Lara Thoms is an inter-disciplinary artist and curator. Her projects have been presented at the MCA, Performance Space and Radial System V. She is part of the collective Field Theory and a contributor to lalaishere.net. In 2012 Lara is mentoring Liz Dunn as part of the JUMP mentoring program.

To prepare your FLYWAY Field Kit for the 2012 Next Wave Festival, we ask that you:

Download the flyway.mp3 file
Sync it to your personal audio device
Ensure that your device has a fully charged battery
Read the FLYWAY Field Guide

The flyway.mp3 file is 168MB. Please ensure you allow enough time to download and sync to your device prior to attending FLYWAY. You will be contacted via email prior to the event with reminder information. A limited number of audio devices will be available on site for loan – please let the artist know at this time if you will require one.

FLYWAY involves a 90 min, outdoor walk. Please wear comfy shoes and dress for the weather. Thick coats and gloves are recommended.

FLYWAY starts at 3:45pm sharp, departing from 60 Leicester St, Carlton (Leicester runs diagonally off Victoria St from the Vic Markets/ Elizabeth St intersection).
